With one month down and roughly two months to go until election day, challenger Kevin Johnson has had all the momentum. The former NBA star has substantially more money. Fargo's early attacks on Johnson fell flat. And lately, he's getting the endorsements.Admittedly, the defection of City Council members Sandy Sheedy and Steve Cohn to Johnson would be a midlevel story, if no one else were wavering on Fargo. But there is wavering, lots of wavering.Kevin McCarty told The Bee on Thursday that he never endorsed Fargo, contrary to her claims he did.McCarty also gushes about Johnson when asked about him. And he ditched a Fargo fundraiser this week – just as Sheedy and Cohn did.So why doesn't McCarty endorse Johnson now?Maybe he fears crossing political consultant Richie Ross, who runs Fargo and several other council members, and is given to making threats?Remember when Johnson was considering a run against his precious Fargo, Li'l Richie boasted that Johnson was "in for the rudest awakening of his life."Perhaps McCarty dreads a wedgie from Richie? No matter. Other City Council members are publicly sticking with Fargo, while quietly telling Johnson they are ready to play ball with him. That's hardly earth-shattering. Playing both sides is a way of life in Sacramento. The really interesting development is who remains standing behind Fargo with the most conviction: Rob Fong and Lauren Hammond.Hammond represents Oak Park, the headquarters for all of Johnson's business and education interests. And Fong? All he did was help Johnson get on the map in Sacramento for something other than basketball. When he served on the Sacramento City Unified school board, Fong was a key player in getting Sacramento High School closed and reopened as a charter school under Johnson's leadership. There are still people in this town who hate Fong for this. And no, hate is not too strong a word.Consequently, Johnson and Fong are tethered by controversial history, both on the same side – until Johnson announced for mayor. That development rocked a dynamic in which many considered Fong the undeclared mayor of Sacramento. Fargo may have the title, but Fong is often credited with wielding the influence many believe a mayor should. Why Fong didn't run for mayor himself is another story for another day. For now, he's standing with Fargo, donating to her campaign, attending her events – and watching Johnson build momentum with each passing day.One wonders if there are secrets he's keeping about Johnson that are driving him toward Fargo. Or perhaps it's simply that Fong believes his political future is best served if Fargo wins.To be fair, Fargo has many other political supporters, including Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, and state Sen. Darrell Steinberg. These are key people. However, these folks do have fairly important day jobs and somewhat taxing challenges, such as the Iraq war and the bleeding state budget. On the ground in Sacramento, unless there is a momentum-changing event, Fong is the best thing going for Fargo right now.
