If you work solely with DB2 software, DB2 certification is an obvious choice. But most DBAs today work in multiple-product shops, and it's not always clear which certification carries the greatest benefits. If cost is an issue — either because you're footing the bill or your department has limited resources, you'll want to examine the programs carefully. Tables 1 and 2 list the requirements for DBA certification for DB2 Version 8 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000. Table 3 shows Oracle9i release 2 certification information. Of course, vendors can change their programs at any time, so be sure to check the vendors' Web sites for the most current information. In DB2's certification program, you receive a certification for each exam you pass. Oracle requires two exams for its entry-level credential, then two more tests (including attendance at one Oracle-approved course) to achieve its standard DBA certification. Microsoft awards its entry-level credential for passing any one of its certification tests. Obtaining the sole Microsoft DBA certification requires passing four exams. Costs can vary, too. At $120 per test, it costs $240 to certify for DB2. But IBM offered free tests for qualified applicants throughout 2001 and 2002. Today, attendees of the IBM technical conferences and International DB2 Users Group (IDUG) conferences also can test for free. IBM also offers reduced prices on tests for upgrading certification to newer product releases. Oracle and Microsoft also offer discounts for upgrade tests and for new tests under development, called beta tests. Table 1: DB2 version 8 DBA certification. The biggest certification cost lies in preparatory classes. Courses from vendors and competing third parties run from $300 to $500 per day, plus travel expenses. A single class requiring travel could cost several thousand dollars. IBM offers many free, downloadable courses that you can take on your PC to prepare for the certification exams (www.ibm.com/software/data/db2/skills). You can realistically expect to pass the DB2 certification tests after studying these free courses. Table 2: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DBA certification. Oracle's standard DBA certification exam fees total $465 ($90 for the first test, and $125 each for the following three exams). The required Oracle-approved classes are roughly $500 per day. Online equivalents cost somewhat less. Table 3: Oracle9i release 2 DBA certification. Microsoft charges $500 for its four exams ($125 per test), and you must pass all four to certify. Microsoft doesn't offer free, downloadable PC courses, but it does sell training kits for about $60 each. Certifying with DB2 costs less and is easier to achieve than certifying with competing products. Cost and convenience aren't the whole story.
